Distinguished and Famous people from Springvale
🏛️ Meng Heang Tak
Meng Heang Tak migrated from Cambodia as a teenager and became a long-term resident of the Springvale area. His education included English-language study at Westall before legal training and more than a decade as a suburban practitioner. He also worked as a Khmer-language broadcaster with SBS. Local government service brought another public role: he served on Greater Dandenong Council from 2012 to 2018 and as mayor in 2015–16, before election to the Victorian Parliament in 2018.
🏮 Frankie Chen
Frankie Chen served as president of the Springvale Asian Business Association from 2009 to 2011. The association's own history credits him with initiating the Asian Gateway project, completed in 2015 as a landmark for the shopping precinct and wider community. His role belongs to the local work of traders and community organisations shaping Springvale's public identity. The gateway was completed after his presidential term, so it is more accurate to describe him as an initiator than to attribute the whole project to one person. That shared achievement provides a concrete example of local leadership extending beyond an office-holder's years in the chair.
⚙️ Harry Harding
Harry Harding worked as chief engineer with Kelly & Lewis at Springvale during the early years of World War II. The firm’s naval work included fitting merchant ships in the Port of Melbourne with guns and other defensive equipment. In December 1941 he moved to Newcastle to help establish the State Dockyard, where he later became director. His Springvale employment connects the district’s engineering industry with the urgent business of protecting wartime shipping. Harding’s subsequent career involved ship construction, heavy machinery and efforts to modernise dockyard methods, building on the practical engineering responsibilities he had already carried in Victoria.
